Corey Loving is a visual development/concept artist hailing from Illinois. Though he studied Maya in school, he ended up relying on his skills as painter to get him a job in animation. Learn more about Loving’s career journey.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I went to school for animation in Chicago learning how to use Maya for four years. It was tough getting a job in animation after school but luckily I always enjoyed painting too so I applied for concept art jobs as well. I got my first studio job on the east coast at Bethesda Games, painting knights for years on a game called Elder Scrolls Online.
In 2015, I came to California where I eventually got my foot in the door of animation. It was a great personal victory to say the least but I never take my opportunities for granted. It was a lot of hard work to get in! A tremendous amount of failing and “thank you for your interest” rejection letters but I refined and refined my art until it worked for animation studios, never taking no for an answer and someone gave me a chance. So anyone reading trying to make it in anything in life not just animation, I hope you keep striving every day for your dreams because it’s worth it to get to the other side of that pain/struggle. My last job was for Disney’s The Rocketeer show, which was a lot of fun, and currently I’m freelancing as a background painter at Warner Bros. on Scooby Doo.
What drew you to animation?
When I first saw Mickey Mouse on TV I was curious as to how it was done. I already drew a lot, but once I found out pictures could move I was more motivated than ever to be a part of that world.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of the job is the job itself! Being able to draw for a living, not everyone can say they get to live their passion. It’s great!
How would you describe your artistic style?
I don’t really have one solid style per se but I do enjoy painting. I had a lot of diverse jobs throughout my career that forced me to learn new styles. For example, for one marketing job I had to switch styles literally every week! One week realism, the next cartoons, the next anime—according to what IP was being marketed at the time but I learned a lot. However, recently I just enjoy making cartoony work with a bit of realism sometimes. I also like cinematic looks.
What inspires you in your artwork?
All the amazing talent around me and just a passion to improve.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy playing games (Smash Bros.), going to the gym, playing basketball, hanging out with friends and family. And, of course, making art!
