The Walt Disney Company today announced its pledge to support nonprofit organizations that advance social justice. An overall pledge of $5 million will start with a $2 million donation to the NAACP.
According to Bob Chapek, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, “The killing of George Floyd has forced our nation to once again confront the long history of injustice that black people in America have suffered, and it is critical that we stand together, speak out and do everything in our power to ensure that acts of racism and violence are never tolerated.”
Today’s pledge is part of an ongoing effort to support organizations that empower and advocate for communities of color. In the past, the company has provided grants to help students from underrepresented groups achieve a higher education. Grants have included $2.5 million to the United Negro College Fund.
The company also recently aired special programming that included an ABC News primetime special about the national response to the killing of George Floyd, “America in Pain: What Comes Next?”, and the re-airing of episodes of black-ish that address police brutality and the lack of accurate representation in American history.
