Tell us a little about yourself and your career.
I’m originally from Cleveland, Ohio. I attended DePaul University where I got my BFA in Animation. Upon graduating I moved out to L.A. and found my footing as a 2D freelance Animator. Eventually, I became a freelance Animation Director, directing projects for Lil Nas X, Steve Harvey, John Legend, and others. This led me wanting to create an original, short hip-hop musical film titled Battu which is in production! We are also developing a series based on the short with Cartoon Network and Academy Award-winning Director Matthew A. Cherry. I’m currently a Story Artist at Netflix Animation!
What challenges have you faced in navigating a career in animation?
Being a kid from the Midwest, it took some time to make connections in Los Angeles. Breaking into the industry was a challenge and took several years. What really helped me was finding a mix of artists like myself trying to break in, and industry vets who could give me advice when I had trouble. Another challenge is finding ways to stay creative every day. I find going to museums, movies, or to the beach really helpful!
Who are your inspirations in the field of animation?
I’m inspired by a lot of great artists. I’m lucky enough to work with one, Paul Briggs, over at Netflix. He’s a master at story and draftsmanship and also a fantastic leader. Bruce W. Smith is another titan who always inspires me. His work inspires a lot of how I handle Black characters in animation. Carl Jones is a big inspiration, too. I’ve literally grown up on all of their work. Tara Whitaker, Dashawn Mahone, and Shakira Pressley are also folks who continue to inspire me.
What do you hope to accomplish as an artist in the animation industry?
Ultimately, the goal is to become an Animation Director and Showrunner. I love working in teams and collaborating with other artists. Getting the opportunity to collaborate with everyone from design to final edit would be lovely. The most exciting part of the animation process to me is collaborating and building ideas, character, and story.
What does being in the Union mean to you?
Being in the Union is a big deal to me. It’s something that was on my bucket list when I moved out here. Knowing they have not just my back, but my co-workers’ and peers’ backs, is really great. Seeing people who have been in the Union for decades have families and stability is really motivational. As a new dad, joining the Union really couldn’t have come at a better time in my life.
