At first glance, it’s not an obvious connection—rugs and animation. But Janae Hall says: “A lot of the rugs I make pull from images from existing TV shows, video games, and pop culture. I love creating original art for rugs, but it’s also fun to pull your favorite character … and see it made in this tactile, completely unique new medium.”
Formerly a staff writer on Zokie of Planet Ruby, and currently freelance writing on different projects at various studios, Hall was looking for a creative outlet that was hands-on and tactile. “When I started seeing people [on Instagram] making custom tufted rugs, I thought that was something I could totally do,” she says. “I bought myself a tufting gun and taught myself how to make pieces through a combination of analyzing the Instagram videos I’d already been watching and finding tutorials from creators I liked.”
With hand-carved detailing, Hall’s playful, plush rugs are one-of-a-kind and handmade. They can be used both on the floor and as wall décor. If used on the floor, they should be kept in a low-traffic area, vacuumed gently but regularly, and spot-cleaned only. Along with her own designs, Hall offers commissioned work.
